artist of the month -TSUKA
"Every doll has its own characteristics, just like human beings- differentshapes, colors, fabrics, and numbers. They are created with my every dayinspirations so I cannot make two that are exactly alike" - TSUKA
TSUKA started wanting to make something that could be enjoyable to widerange of people, from kids to grandpas, in all parts of the world. She usesall recycled fabrics, buttons, threads, etc. to create each one, all by herown hands. They vary, but what they have in common is that they all containbamboo charcoal inside, which is popular in Japan for purifying air. TheKAO(which means face) series has lavender or chamomile inside for your moment of relaxation.
TSUKA's work was first noticed when she had an exhibition in the heart of Tokyo with her numbered SEIJIN-KUN. Within the past 2.5 years, 1125 numbered SEIJIN-KUN dolls, more than 1000 key chained SEIJIN-KUN, and numerous numbers of KAO has been produced by her hands. Seeing picture of SEIJIN-KUN living its life in various places in the world has kept her motivation and creativity to create wider range of dolls. Come and pick the one that best suits your character!

product of the month - KEKKAI -
"KEKKAI", a piece of smoked kiri wood (paulownia) is an item originally produced to be used in tea ceremonies, which was first made in substitution for "Furosaki", a separation to divide the host and guest. Furosaki can only be used in tea ceremonies, but this Kekkai is now casually used as an interior item.
A piece of Kiri wood is smoked over and over again. Wiping off the ashes, the craftsman polish the smoked wood with a cloth one by one. By repeating this process, the "warm soft color" is made, and creates a beautiful design that only nature can produce.
Each piece vary in design, but the average size of the Kekkai is about 28"W x 9"H. $90.
artist of the month -HARVEST-
Haru and Hiroshi were two skaters who always wanderd what to do with their old skateboards stacked in their apartment room. Boards that are too cracked and beaten, but too attached to trash. So they came up with a great idea... to make jewelry out of recycled skateboards!
Recycled jewelry by HARVEST are made in a skater's and artist's point of views. They propose a new way of recycling by extendeduse of precious skateboards. Each piece is curved and cut by their own hands. All colors, stickers, and dents are from the boards' previous life on the streets and ramps.
"We are always reminded that these skateboards came from a live tree. Our wish is that small idea or an act like this will lead to `keeping the earth`. I hope you can find something that you can recycle around you too."- HARVEST (www.harvest-re.com)
*All products vary in colors because every one of them is an original cut out from a skateboard.* $40 - $280

sep.17.2005
In celebration of tortoise's second birthday, we will be launching the "tortoise gallery" (in our back room!). In appreciation for your support of the tortoise store, we are thrilled to present to you our feature artist.
Born in Japan and now lives in our local Venice neighborhood, SHIO KUSAKA interprets the basic form of planters as if she draws them while she keeps the material and function of pottery. Each piece a delicate balance of clean lines and crisp tones, tell a minimal tale of simplicity. But once you hold it in your hands you will be astonished by the complex story it has to tell.
Join us at the reception next Saturday to meet the artist, and see her amazing work with your own eyes!

RECEPTION:
September 24th (sat) 7pm - 10pm
EXHIBITION:
September 25th (sun) - October 23rd (sun)
*Abbot Kinney Festival is on September 25th!

artist of the month
sori yanagi (1915~, Tokyo)
"True beauty is not made; it is born naturally. In design, consciousness should follow the natural dispensation and thus flow into the unconscious, the ultimate point in the act of design. Beauty originates from this point. A superior designer is one who follows the laws of nature while making use of them wherever possible." - Sori Yanagi's works and philosophy, yobisha.
if you have come to our shop once, you have probably laid your eyes on the beautiful 'butterfly stool'. from ice cream spoons to sacred fire stand at the sapporo olympics, sori yanagi has been the pioneer of design in japan, producing works that combines elegant simplicity and function. being a living treasure in japan, sori did not stop designing just until recently.
his discontinued book, "design" (japanese/english, published in 1983) will arrive once again at tortoise in end of september. this may be the last time you will see it, so don't miss it! ($88)
